Legacy

Burr · Act I: The Rise of the Prodigy

Track 2: The weight of his ancestors. He isn't starting from the bottom like Hamilton; he's starting from the top and has to maintain it.

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
But what if the tree was cut down before you could see it?

My father preached fire, he spoke to the soul
My mother was brilliance, she played her role
They left me a fortune, they left me a name
But they left me alone in the center of the frame
I walk through the halls of the college they built
And every stone whispers a layer of guilt
"Do better, be greater, rise up to the station"
I’m a monument built to a dead generation.

Legacy. It’s a heavy coat to wear in the heat.
Legacy. It’s the shoes that are too big for your feet.
I’m chasing a ghost, I’m running a race
Against a man who is gone, who I can’t replace.
Legacy.
Is it a gift or a cage for me?

I see other men, they invent who they are
They start in the dirt and they aim for a star
But I start on the mountain, the view is so clear
The only way forward is down from here
Unless I can build something new, something mine
Not just a branch on the Edwards line
I need to be tested, I need to be real
Not just the wax, but the stamp and the seal.

The books are too quiet. The library's cold.
I’m tired of doing what I have been told.
There’s a war coming. I hear the drum.
Maybe that’s where the answer will come.
If I die on the field, well, at least I died free
From the crushing weight of this legacy.

Legacy. It’s a heavy coat to wear in the heat.
Legacy. It’s the shoes that are too big for your feet.
I’m chasing a ghost, I’m running a race
Against a man who is gone, who I can’t replace.
Legacy.
Watch me break it and set myself free.

To the North.
To Quebec.
Let's see who I am when the name doesn't matter.
